Ten ways to feel more confident in the gym https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/ten-ways-to-feel-more-confident-in-the-gym/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/ten-ways-to-feel-more-confident-in-the-gym/#respond Wed, 22 Mar 2023 15:56:40 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=640

Going to the gym can be a daunting experience for many people – whether it’s because you are new to the fitness world and lack experience, or you feel self-conscious. However, building up confidence in the gym is beneficial for achieving your fitness goals. If you’re someone who lacks confidence, don’t worry, as you’re not alone.

Fortunately, there are ways you can build your self-esteem and feel more comfortable in the gym environment. Our fitness gurus at our Slough gym, Bracknell gym and Langley gym have put together their tips on how to feel more confident.

1. SET REALISTIC GOALS

Setting goals that are achievable is the first step towards building confidence in the gym. Having a clear goal in mind gives you direction and purpose for your workouts. Your goal could be anything from losing weight or building muscle, to just improving overall fitness. Setting realistic goals helps you to track your progress and provides motivation to continue.

2. DRESS COMFORTABLY

Wearing comfortable clothing can make a big difference in how confident you feel in the gym. When you are at ease in what you are wearing, you can focus on your workout instead of worrying about your clothes. We recommend wearing breathable and stretchy fabrics that allow you to move freely. Also, it’s a good idea to invest in a good pair of trainers that provide support and comfort.

3. PLAN YOUR WORKOUTS

Once you have set your goals, the next step is to make a plan for how you will achieve them. Planning your workouts in advance helps you to stay organised, focused and committed. Not only will you have a clear idea of what exercises you’ll be doing, but you’ll also be less likely to feel overwhelmed or unsure of what to do next. You can create a workout plan that suits your fitness level, preferences, and schedule to ensure you will make progress towards your goals, which can boost your confidence.

4. START SLOWLY

When you are new to the gym, it can be tempting to jump straight into intense workouts. However, starting slowly is important to avoid injuries and build up your confidence. Our Slough, Bracknell and Langley gyms advise starting with low-intensity workouts and gradually increasing the intensity and duration. This way, you can build up your fitness level and confidence over time.

5. USE A PERSONAL TRAINER

If you’re new to the gym or feeling unsure about your workouts, working with a personal trainer can be a great way to build confidence. A personal trainer can create a customised workout plan based on your goals and fitness level, as well as provide guidance and support during your workouts. Additionally, they can assist you with learning proper form and technique, which can help you avoid injury and feel more confident in your abilities. Our trainers will work with you and tailor a programme to help you achieve your fitness goals.

6. FOCUS ON YOURSELF

One of the most common reasons people lack confidence in the gym is because they feel like they are being watched or judged. The truth is most people will be focused on their own workouts and pay little attention to others. It’s important to remember that everyone starts somewhere, and the only person you should be comparing yourself to is yourself. Instead of worrying about what others think, focus on yourself and your goals. Remember, you are there to improve your fitness, not to impress others. For women who would prefer to work out in female gyms, we have ladies only areas in our Bracknell and Slough gyms.

7. CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESS

Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem. Acknowledge your achievements and use them as motivation to keep going. Track your progress by taking measurements or photos to see how far you’ve come. This will boost your confidence and help you stay on track.

8. BRING A WORKOUT BUDDY

Working out with a friend can be a great way to build confidence in the gym. Not only will you have someone to talk to and encourage you, but you’ll also feel less self-conscious when you have someone by your side. Plus, having a workout buddy can make your gym sessions more enjoyable and motivating.

9. TRY NEW THINGS

It’s easy to fall into a routine when it comes to your workouts, but trying new things can help you build confidence and stay motivated. Whether it’s using a different piece of equipment, taking part in one of our fitness classes or making use of the indoor sports arena and 5-a-side football pitches at our Langley gym, mixing things up can help you stay engaged and excited about your workouts.

10. UTILISE OUR COMMUNITY

We have our own app which provides you with a lot of information, such as nutritional advice, online workouts and fitness class schedules. In addition, there is a very active community who chat and support each other – and are always there to give you a boost.

Being confident in the gym takes time and effort, but it is worth it to achieve your objectives. Remember, with patience and dedication, you can reach your fitness goals. To help you feel at ease, we are happy to give you a tour of our Slough gym, Bracknell gym or Langley gym. Just click Book a Tour.

How many times a week should I work out? https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/how-many-times-a-week-should-i-work-out/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/how-many-times-a-week-should-i-work-out/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2023 16:00:14 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=642

The answer to this question really does depend on your goals. Do you want to lose weight? Is increasing muscle your aim? Are you planning to lead a more active lifestyle?

We do fully understand that taking out a gym membership can be a big commitment, so our friendly teams at our Bracknell, Langley and Slough gyms have given their expert advice about how often you should be working out to meet your goals. Spoiler alert, you don’t need to spend hours in a gym every day!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WORK OUT TO LOSE WEIGHT?

If your goal is to lose weight, medical and nutritional experts suggest that aiming to lose one or two pounds per week is ideal. This ensures that you have an achievable goal, your body doesn’t go into ‘shock’ by losing too much weight quickly, and it means you are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. This can be achieved through regular exercise and nutritious eating.

Work with your gym team to design a programme that combines cardio exercises and strength training. A cardio workout is a vigorous activity that increases your heart rate, and can include using equipment, such as treadmills, rowing machines, and steppers, or taking part in aerobic classes, such as spinning or HIIT. Whereas, strength training includes weights and resistance bands.

We suggest you gradually build up the number of times you visit the gym to four or five times per week, with sessions for cardio and strength lasting for around 30 minutes each.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WORK OUT TO BUILD MUSCLE?

When aiming to enhance muscle, focus on strength training increasing resistance and weights as you get stronger. If you’re new to strength training, our team suggests visiting the gym two or three days a week for beginners, raising to four or five days as you gain experience and muscle strengthens – each workout should last between 20 and 30 minutes.

When taking part in any form of exercise, it’s important to determine a programme that works for you and gives your body time to recover. This could be visiting the gym every week day, then having Saturday and Sunday off, or three days on, then one day off, etc.

Our team is happy to help you create a strength training programme by giving advice on the number of reps for each exercise and when to work on the lower body, the upper body or full body.

HOW CAN A GYM MEMBERSHIP HELP ME INCREASE MY FITNESS LEVEL?

Any form of exercise is good, especially if you have previously been fairly inactive. Taking the plunge and taking out a gym membership is a great thing to do, and the Absolutely Fitness trainers will be extremely welcoming and help you to make a positive lifestyle change.

The government’s physical activity guidelines suggest that adults should undertake 150 minutes of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity every week. A gym membership could easily help you to reach and smash this target. Have a read of our blog for some top tips on how to make the most out of a gym membership to learn more about the benefits.

Generally, spending 30 minutes in the gym a few times a week will definitely increase your fitness levels. However, it’s important not to jump straight in and push your body to the extreme, as this could do more damage than good by causing an injury. Instead, start slowly and listen to your body – you will know when it’s time to spend an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill or increase the weight of the kettlebells you are using.

If you’re looking to make a change by kick-starting a new fitness programme or joining a new gym, the teams at our Slough, Bracknell and Langley gyms will be happy to show you around – just click book a tour.

The benefits of strength training for women https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/the-benefits-of-strength-training-for-women/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/the-benefits-of-strength-training-for-women/#respond Wed, 11 Jan 2023 14:12:35 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=644

Statistics have shown that 54% of gym members and 76% of attendees at gym classes, such as indoor spinning, are women*. Despite these statistics, the number of females who include strength training in a fitness programme is relatively low.

There is a common misconception among women that strength training will bulk them up; however, high levels of oestrogen can make it difficult for women to become overly muscular. A feeling of intimidation when working out with weights in potentially male-dominated areas of the gym can also make strength training a big turn-off.

Here we answer some frequently asked questions about strength training for women and highlight the health benefits it has.

WHAT IS STRENGTH TRAINING?

Strength training involves using your body weight, resistance bands and weights, such as dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls, to build strength, endurance and muscle. As you become more experienced, slowly increasing the resistance and upping the weights will encourage your muscles to grow stronger.

At our Bracknell and Slough gyms, we have ladies only areas that allow women who prefer female-only environments to feel relaxed and confident. These spaces feature state-of-the-art equipment that includes soft grip free weights and resistance machines for strength training, as well as cardio equipment.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF STRENGTH TRAINING?

What aren’t the benefits might be easier to answer! As well as helping to maintain general physical health as we get older, strength training can:

  • Encourage fat loss
  • Relieve back pain, as it can help to retrain your movement patterns
  • Improve balance
  • Increase bone density, helping to reduce the development of bone weakening conditions such as osteoporosis
  • Improve mental wellbeing
  • Support posture

Whilst strength training may not burn as many calories as more cardio-based exercises, it will help you maintain and improve healthy body fat, and combat against weight-based diseases such as diabetes. Increasing your muscle mass will support you in improving your metabolism, meaning you will burn additional calories in the hours after training.

HOW DO I START A STRENGTH TRAINING PROGRAMME?

As with starting any type of fitness plan, always speak to a professional before beginning strength training. Our team of friendly trainers will be able to give advice on the basics and show you how to get started safely, ensuring you do not cause yourself any injuries.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD WOMEN TAKE PART IN STRENGTH TRAINING?

This can depend on your fitness levels before starting and your goals. If you have been taking part in regular cardio exercise, such as running or cycling, you will quickly adapt to strength training. If you’re just starting out, we’d suggest aiming for once or twice a week, with the aim of increasing this to three or four times a week – this will give you plenty of time for recovery.

CAN STRENGTH TRAINING BE INCLUDED IN AN OVERALL FITNESS PROGRAMME?

Yes, definitely. If you workout four times a week, you could start to alternate and focus on cardio one day, then strength training the next, and so on. To add some cardio to your strength training workout, it could be as simple as shortening your breaks, or moving during your intervals. Whereas, by adding some weights to your cardio workout, you can combine the two programmes.

GET STARTED WITH A NEW FITNESS PLAN

If you want to start including strength training in your workout programme, or have fitness goals you would like to achieve, our friendly team will be happy to help. You can take out a membership online or get in touch if you would like to arrange a tour of one of our gyms.

Top 10 tips to get the most out of your gym membership https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/top-10-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-gym-membership/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/top-10-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-your-gym-membership/#comments Thu, 16 Jun 2022 14:20:00 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=652 We know that the decision to take out a gym membership is quite a commitment, but as you’re pledging a payment every month to fulfil a goal of improving your fitness, becoming more active, or losing weight, it’s a really positive thing to do.

Statistics indicate that out of all the people in the UK who pay for a gym membership, 12% don’t visit their gym regularly*, so we’ve put together our top 10 tips on how to make the most out of your gym membership.

TIP 1 – TRY BEFORE YOU BUY
Before you even sign up to join a gym, ask to have a look around and have a free trial. Being in an environment you like and feel comfortable is a factor in whether you will regularly visit. It will also give you a chance to visit at a time that fits into your lifestyle – if you are going to regularly workout when you finish work, but the gym is super busy at that time, will that stop you?

TIP 2 – HAVE A PROPER INDUCTION
At the start of your membership make sure you have a gym induction. You’ll be shown all the facilities and how to use the equipment, which can help you feel more comfortable and stop you from injuring yourself. We provide booster sessions every day where our members can have a refresh of how to operate our machines.

TIP 3 – COMMIT TO A REGULAR ROUTINE
If you just plan to go to the gym when you have a bit of free time, spoiler alert, you won’t go! And the longer you leave it, the harder it will be to get into a routine, so commit at the start of your gym membership. Do you want to workout before you start work, or after work? Are you planning to go to the gym twice a week, three times a week, or every weekend? Set a routine and stick with it.

TIP 4 – SET YOURSELF REALISTIC GOALS
You may have an over-arching reason for taking out a gym membership – whatever that is, setting realistic goals will help you to achieve your target. If you want to lose weight, have a plan of how much you want to lose in the first month. If you want to improve your fitness, how much further can you run on a treadmill at the end of month one, compared to at the start of your gym membership? By doing this you will get little boosts along the way that will help keep you motivated.

TIP 5 – HAVE A PERSONAL TRAINING SESSION
Whether you want to get your gym membership off to a good start, or you feel you’re stuck in a workout rut, setting up a session with a personal trainer can really give you a boost. They will listen to your goals and set up a routine of exercises that will help you achieve them.

TIP 6 – SET UP A JOINT MEMBERSHIP
If you’re someone who benefits from working out with a friend or friends, then speak to your gym about a group membership. We have one, it’s called Squad Membership, and we have special prices for between two and five people who join together. If you have colleagues who would like to head for a workout during a lunch break, or before or after work, then speak to your company about the possibility of setting up a corporate membership, as that will entitle you to discounted gym fees.

TIP 7 – INCLUDE CLASSES
From yoga and spin classes to HIIT workouts and boxercise, your gym will offer a variety of group fitness classes that can be a lot of fun and will add something different to your fitness routine. Classes are also a fantastic way of meeting other members, making friends and discovering a new favourite exercise.

TIP 8 – KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET
If you think that you need to spend hours working out during every gym session, think again. You’ll achieve significant results by completing a regular 30–40-minute workout. In fact, the majority of our group fitness classes are only half an hour.

TIP 9 – MIX UP YOUR WORKOUTS
If you always use one piece of equipment, you may become bored very quickly, so mix it up. Your gym will be full of state-of-the-art machines for you to make use of. This will also help you to achieve your goals by working different muscle groups and areas of the body.

TIP 10 – ENGAGE WITH THE GYM’S ONLINE COMMUNITY
Nowadays, most gyms will have an app where you can find a whole plethora of helpful information that will benefit your gym membership, such as online workouts and nutritional advice. There will also be an area where members and gym staff will chat and add messages, so get involved. Our community are really engaged and offer support to each other.

Worried about entering a contract? Then our hero and superhero membership packages may be ideal for you as they are contract free. With a range of gym membership options, we’re certain there will be a package that will help you reach your fitness goals.

How to start working out in the gym https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/how-to-start-working-out-in-the-gym/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/how-to-start-working-out-in-the-gym/#respond Tue, 10 May 2022 09:00:00 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=654 So, you’ve decided you want to be more active and improve your fitness by joining a gym, but you’re a bit nervous and have no idea what to expect or how to start.

Our Slough gym, Bracknell gym and Langley gym teams have put together the following advice to help you prepare, from dealing with nerves to what weights to pick up first.

OVERCOMING GYM ANXIETY
Absolutely Fitness’s tips on getting started at a gymIf you’ve never stepped foot in a gym before, they can seem quite daunting places, but like everything, once you have a routine you realise that the equipment is easy to use, everyone working out has the same goal – to improve and maintain fitness, and they can be really supportive and friendly places.

Every new member at a gym – including those who join Absolutely Fitness – will take part in an induction. Don’t skip this, as it will answer a lot of your questions. You’ll receive a tour of the facilities, be shown how to use equipment, and find out what you need to do when you arrive for a workout, ie, whether you need to sign in, log your car number plate, etc. These inductions really do help to deal with any gym anxiety you may have.

At Absolutely Fitness, members can join booster sessions, which take place every day and give advice about how to use our app and equipment, and allow you to ask questions. However, our members don’t have to wait for a booster session if they need advice; our fitness gurus are an extremely friendly bunch and do everything they can to make new members feel welcome and comfortable and are always available to help you reach your fitness goals.

To help our members feel comfortable working out, we have specialist ladies only areas our Slough gym and our Bracknell gym.

WHAT TO WEAR
Overall, you want to feel comfortable. There is a lot of specialist workout clothing on the market, but when you’re just starting out, you only really need leggings, tracksuit bottoms, or shorts and a lightweight t-shirt. Trainers are a must, and whilst there are specific gym shoes for different types of workouts, such as cross fit trainers and weightlifting shoes, start with a decent pair of trainers that fit your feet correctly and offer some support. It’s also essential to invest in a good quality sports bra if you need one.

As your fitness journey progresses, you may want to invest in new clothing.

USING THE MACHINES
Your gym will be full of equipment that can work every type of muscle. At our gyms we have state-of-the-art machines from industry-leading brand Technogym.

During your gym induction you will be shown how to use the machines, but if you’re unsure please ask. Using a piece of equipment incorrectly can cause damage to the apparatus and yourself.

Depending on what you want to achieve will determine the type of machines and equipment you use:

If you’re looking to lose weight or improve your fitness, head straight for the cardio machines.

Treadmill
Exercise bike
Cross trainer
Rowing machine
Stepper
Looking to tone muscles or build strength? The resistance and free weight areas are for you.

Dumbbells
Resistance machines
Kettlebells
Barbells
Cable machine
If you want to improve your endurance, motion and balance, the functional training zone is ideal.

Suspension straps
Kettlebells

HOW TO NOT INJURE YOURSELF
Expert advice from Absolutely Fitness about working out at a gymMake sure you warm-up before starting any form of exercise. Gym anxiety can mean you just want to get started and jump straight on that treadmill, but it would be a massive mistake. A warm-up helps loosen your muscles and reduces the risk of injury – everyone needs to warm up, so don’t feel nervous. Include exercises that gently stretch your muscles, such as lunges, squats, and push-ups.
Free weights, such as dumbbells, can be heavier than they look and you can cause muscle injuries by grabbing the first weight you see! Start by using the lighter weights and work your way up – if using a barbell, this can simply be starting with the bar without any weights.
Don’t overestimate your abilities by doing too much. Begin by working at a lower intensity and gradually increase the amount of exercise you do. It will be better to do this than throw yourself in, injure yourself on your first visit, and have to rest up for a few weeks.
When you exercise, you will sweat meaning you will lose body fluid. It’s important to drink water so you don’t become dehydrated. Drinking before, after and during a workout can help to boost your energy and avoid cramp.
AND FINALLY, SOME GYM ETIQUETTE
Put weights back after use, and don’t drop them
Wipe down a piece of equipment after use
Don’t hog a machine or piece of equipment – 20 minutes is a good amount of time
Be patient if the piece of equipment you want to use is being used by someone else
Keep the music to yourself – whether you are listening to music or a podcast, use headphones/earpods

‘Egg-cellent’ response to Bracknell’s Easter Egg Appeal https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/egg-cellent-response-to-bracknells-easter-egg-appeal/ https://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/news-blog/egg-cellent-response-to-bracknells-easter-egg-appeal/#respond Wed, 20 Apr 2022 12:45:00 +0000 http://www.absolutely-fitness.co.uk/?p=656 Generous gym-goers donated over 50 chocolate treats to our Bracknell gym’s Easter Egg Appeal, which were passed to local charity Promise Inclusion for distribution to children with additional needs.

As part of the work we do for our own charity Absolutely Together, the Absolutely Fitness team is fully aware of the amazing work Promise Inclusion does with young people in the local area.

Absolutely Together provides families who have members with additional needs with free access to leisure facilities that they can take part in together – something that is not always possible due to financial or physical restrictions – and is building a relationship with Promise Inclusion.

Promise Inclusion is an independent charity that supports adults and children with learning disabilities and/or autism, their parents, carers and their families, by providing information and activities, amongst many other services.

Suzanne Kaplan, Assistant Manager at Absolutely Fitness Bracknell, visited the charity to pass on all the donations. She commented:

“We have seen the support that Promise Inclusion gives to local children, and we wanted to do something that would help put smiles on their faces. We encouraged members and visitors to donate an egg when they came to work out, and we are delighted with the response the appeal received. Thank you to our members for their generosity and kindness. We are aiming to do more for Promise Inclusion in the future.”
